Equation of lines

Writing Linear Equations

The slope of a nonvertical line is m =

Given the slope and the y - intercept of a line, the slope and a point on a line, or two points on a line, you can use the slope - intercept form to write an equation of the line.

Example: Write an equation of a line that has a slope of and passes through the point ( - 4, - 3).

Solution: y = mx + b

- 3 = ( - 4) + b

- 1 = b

So, m = and b = - 1, and an equation of the line is y = x - 1.
